All together now

There is never enough room in these things

loaded down with boxes of food

and containers of water

we shoulder to shoulder

in life jackets we hope we will never need

feeling the suck of the sea as we

row away from the last, past disaster

aware of the ever circling sharks

that seek to feed if we touch the water

The sea rock gray and relentless

an unmerciful infinity

our imaginations can not comprehend

So vast we ask if maybe

Columbus might have been wrong

so that we might fall off some edge

and have it all come to an end

each of us remembering some

personal holocaust

that keeps us from looking back

though we feel the dark clouds

rushing after us from behind,

all of us struggling against the inevitable

hoping if we all pull together

we might keep disaster

from happening again
